Healing & Transformation

The grief moved on. Something else stayed.

The world gave you a few weeks. Then it expected you to be functioning again — and mostly you were. You went back to work. You answered the messages. You said you were doing all right.

What nobody asked about was the anger, the guilt, the resentment you could not admit to. Those did not get a few weeks. They went underground, and they are still running.

In your own words

Does any of this sound familiar?

You are still angry with them, and you have never said that to anyone.

You held everyone else together and never once had your own turn.

You go over the last weeks looking for what you should have done differently.

Anniversaries take you apart and you tell nobody it is happening.

You feel guilty for still being sad — or guilty for not being sad enough.

You are grieving something that was not a death, and you are not sure you are allowed to.

None of this means something is wrong with you. It means a belief is running that you have not yet had the chance to look at.

What is actually running

Somewhere in your past, you quietly concluded:

You did not choose these consciously. You may never have said them out loud. But one of them will sound familiar, and that one has been shaping your decisions ever since.

A stone arch bridge and its reflection

"I should have done more."

"I do not deserve to be happy now."

"If I stop grieving, I am letting them go."

"Other people have it worse. I have no right to this."

"I have to be the strong one."

These become invisible rules. Nobody handed them to you on paper, and you have never once put them on trial — yet they quietly govern your relationships, your work, your rest, and your health.

The pattern underneath

What actually holds it in place

Grief is not a problem to be solved. It is love with nowhere left to go, and it is meant to be felt. We will never try to talk you out of it.

What keeps people stuck is rarely the loss itself. It is what they quietly concluded because of it — that they should have done more, that happiness would be a betrayal, that putting it down means letting the person go. Those beliefs hold grief in place and turn something that was meant to move into something that does not.

And grief was never built to be carried alone. Most of us do exactly that, politely, for years, while everyone around us assumes we are fine because we said so.

The work itself

How Choose Again works with this

We do not hurry grief and we do not try to resolve it. We work on what has grown around it — the guilt, the self-blame, the sense that moving forward would be a betrayal. In a small group where nobody is checking their watch and nobody needs you to be all right, most people find they can finally set down something they have been holding since the day it happened. What is left afterwards is still love. It simply stops costing you your life.

Six Steps to Freedom

The book will not tell you how to grieve. It will show you how to find the belief that has been holding the grief in place — the guilt, or the sense that moving on is a betrayal.

Diederik wrote the book so the steps would not depend on him. You can read it and work them alone at your kitchen table.

"Direct and eloquent… a practical six-step program to self-liberation."
Gabor Maté, MD
